E-GLASS

AGY produces a number of E-Glass fiber products. E glass fibers are fibers with high stability and durability and are, with the exception of sizing ingredients, inorganic, incombustible and will neither expand nor contract with moisture changes. The glass composition used in AGY formulations meets the certification for E glass as defined by ASTM’s D578-00 Standard Specification for Glass Fiber Strands.

Yarns

Yarns are defined as a continuous strand of filaments coated with an engineered chemical coating or size (or sizing system), twisted together and used in weaving, knitting, braiding, plying and many other forms of fabric. AGY produces a full spectrum of E glass yarns with diameters from 4 to 9 microns, designed to meet your most demanding performance, processing and cost requirements by varying any one or all of the following fundamental components of the yarn:

  • glass chemistry
  • coating or sizing chemistry
  • diameter and number of the individual filaments in the bundle
  • level and direction of the twist

Rovings

AGY does produce a small quantity of E glass assembled rovings for specialty products and processes. Contact us for more details regarding these products. AGY does not produce any single ended E glass rovings.

Chopped Fibers

AGY’s E glass chopped fiber products are available for a number of customer processes and end uses with chop lengths of ¼”(6mm), ½”(12mm) or 2”(50mm). The fibers are primarily available with starch oil sizing which allows good dispersion in the customer processing step.

S-2 GLASS FIBERS

S-2 Glass fiber products are the ultimate in high strength glass fiber that provides the highest level of performance available in all glass fibers. Produced with a higher content of silica than standard glass fiber products, S-2 glass fibers offer the ultimate physical properties including high tensile and compressive strength, high temperature resistance, improved impact resistance and toughness.

YARNS

Yarns are defined as a continuous strand of filaments coated with an engineered chemical coating or size (or sizing system), twisted together and used in weaving, knitting, braiding, plying and many other forms of fabric. AGY produces a range of S-2 Glass yarns with diameters from 5 to 9 microns, designed to meet your most demanding performance, processing and cost requirements by varying any one or all of the following fundamental components of the yarn:

  • glass chemistry
  • coating or binder chemistry
  • diameter and number of the individual filaments in the bundle
  • level and direction of the twist

ROVINGS

AGY produces both single ended and assembled rovings using the S-2 Glass formulation of glass fibers. Assembled rovings are available in a number of different yields from 2500 to 250 yrd/lb (203 to 2050 Tex). Our assembled rovings are also available with a range of sizing systems to optimize performance in a range of thermoset resin systems. AGY’s single end rovings, sometimes called ZenTron and VeTron, are available in fiber diameters from 9 micron to 26 microns to suit different processes and end uses and are available with sizing suitable for a range of both thermoset and thermoplastic resins.

CHOPPED FIBERS

AGY produces a full spectrum of chopped S-2 Glass products designed to meet your most demanding performance and processing requirements with sizing suitable for a range of both thermoset and thermoplastic resins. Our thermoplastics sizing systems are designed for specific ranges of polymers and are not a “universal fit” product, 553 for high temperature resins such as PEEK, 544 for Polyamides, 528 for Polycarbonate and Polyesters and 599 for use in Polypropylene. All AGY’s thermoplastic chopped products are 4mm in chop length. AGY’s thermoset compatible chopped fiber products are available with sizing systems for a number of processes, resins and with a selection of chopped fiber lengths.

PRODUCTS FOR ELECTRONICS

FIBERS FOR ELECTRONICS

AGY has been at the forefront of the development of fibers used in the electronics sector for a number of applications. Our processing methods allow us to make a number of different glass chemistries simultaneously in the plant and this allows us to develop and produce fibers for specific applications.

L-GLASS®

AGY’s L-Glass yarns are specifically designed to meet the demanding performance requirements of PCBs used in high-speed digital communications. The continuing exponential growth of mobile data traffic requires data handling systems to operate at higher speeds and frequencies. PCB laminates made with L-Glass yarns enable higher processing speeds while minimizing signal loss for critical devices such as high-speed routers and servers, and mobile communications infrastructure. L-Glass yarns can also be deployed to offset increases in dielectric constant (Dk) and dissipation factor (Df) often seen when switching to halogen-free resin systems. L-Glass yarns are produced using a proprietary patented glass composition designed for the specific requirements of low Dk and low Df. L-Glass yarns are available in a wide range of fiber micronage and yield/tex, allowing production of low loss fabrics analogous to most all standard PCB fabrics.

L-2 GLASS®

L-2 Glass yarns are AGY’s second generation of low dielectric constant (Dk) and dissipation factor (Df) glass fibers, improving on the performance of the first-generation L-Glass fibers with improvements in both measurements. L-2 Glass yarns are produced using a proprietary patented glass composition designed for the specific requirements of low Dk and low Df. L-2 Glass yarns are available in a wide range of fiber micronage and yield/tex, allowing production of very low loss fabrics analogous to most all standard PCB fabrics.

S-3 HDI GLASS®

AGY’s S-3 HDI Glass yarns are specifically designed to meet the demanding performance requirements of IC substrate PCBs. The use of smartphones and tablet PCs continues to grow globally. In addition, the functionality of these devices continues to increase, which has created the need for smaller and highly specialized PCBs. IC substrates are utilized as the connection between the IC chips and the PCB, and represent state-of-the-art miniaturization in PCB design. Often referred to as chip scale package, package-on-package, or multi-chip package solutions, these PCBs are routinely found in smartphones and tablet PCs. S-3 HDI Glass yarns are designed for the specific requirements of low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and high tensile modulus. S-3 HDI yarns are available in a wide range of fiber micronage and yield/tex, including ultra-fine yarns for the thinnest substrates.

SPECIALTY FIBERS

AGY produces and sells a range of high-performance fibers which have been developed to meet the needs of customers in a range of different markets and applications. These specific formulations include the following products:

S-1 HM Glass® rovings are available as single ended rovings, these fibers, developed as a next generation of S-Glass product, are designed to give the highest mechanical properties while meeting the economic needs for the reinforcement market. These fibers which are used in a number of industrial applications come with sizing systems suitable for either polyester or epoxy based thermoset resins.

S-3 UHM® Glass fiber performance was developed using AGY’s advanced Modular Direct Melt (MDM) production technology and utilizes a proprietary formulation of S-Glass raw materials to produce this unique glass fiber. With the highest tensile modulus glass fiber commercially available 99 GPa (14,359 ksi), it is an improvement of approximately 40% over E-Glass.
