AGY has been producing E Glass fiber since our inception in 1963, and it has been the foundation from which all our glass innovations have launched. For over 20 years, AGY has been supporting multiple industries, including aerospace, automotive, and national defense. And our longstanding relationships have made AGY integral to the global supply chain—and sets us apart as the industry-accepted standard in multiple market applications.
Strong on sustainability
E Glass fiber is made from some of the most abundant raw materials in the world: quartz sand and limestone. Modern mining techniques, coupled with energy-efficient melting technology allows E Glass to be a sustainable and environmentally friendly material.
No other textile material offers the superior
combination of properties as E Glass fiber.
- High strength-to-weight ratio: E Glass fibers are 2x as strong as steel yet weigh about 65% less.
- Superior dimensional stability: Resist stretching or shrinking in response to changes in ambient conditions.
- Outstanding burn resistance: Because it’s inorganic, E Glass fiber will not burn or smolder.
- Exceptional moisture resistance: Cylindrical and non-porous, E Glass does not absorb water, dries quickly, and won’t promote rot or mildew.
- Great thermal conductivity: E Glass fiber dissipates heat more rapidly than asbestos or organic textile fibers.
- Outstanding electrical performance: Able to withstand high temperatures and not absorb moisture, E Glass fiber is a natural choice for electrical insulation. E Glass has a comparatively low dielectronic constant and a very good resistance to breakdown at high voltage.
- Flexible processability: E Glass fibers are easily processed by weaving, winding, texturizing, laminating, carding, knitting, braiding, cabling, pultrusion, woven and non-woven scrims, plying, hand lay-up, filament winding, compression molding, unidirectional pre-impregnation and contact molding.
AGY’s specialized E Glass fiber products, manufactured in the USA in Aiken, SC, are produced with more environmental diligence than any of our competitors.
Tailored for specific applications, processes, and product requirements, E Glass fiber is available in a wide variety of sizing systems, with diameters from 4 to 9 microns. The glass composition used in AGY formulations meets the certification for E glass as defined by ASTM’s D578-00 Standard Specification for Glass Fiber Strands.
AGY E Glass innovations can meet distinct customer needs by varying one or all of its fundamental components.
